Max’s 2018 Beekeeping Class

January 6, 2018 – Max’s 2018 Beekeeping Class will be offered Saturday, January 20th, 8:00 am to 12:00pm at the Ag Research Station, 4312 Hwy 42, Sturgeon Bay.

Please contact Max at 920-743-8457 or mwmarti1@wisc.edu to reserve a spot. Class is limited to 20 participants, cost is $25.00 (pay when you arrive).

Brown County Beekeeping Association is also having a beginner beekeeping class, see details here.

DCBC Meeting – December 4, 2017

November 27, 2017 – This month is the Door County Beekeepers Club Meeting And Pot Luck Social. This month we’ll meet at the Crossroads in Sturgeon Bay at 6:30pm on Monday, December 4th.

Agenda includes a Caribbean Bee Cruise Travel Log, viewing entertaining slides of apiaries visited by Bill and Barb Meyer during their Caribbean Honeybee cruise. He will also share about The Wisconsin Honey Producers State Meeting, held in Eau Claire, this November. Come and find out the top 5 ‘need to know’ pointers.

Honey Sampling Social and Pot Luck! Bring a sample of your honey to share and enjoy tasting others golden harvest. Hot mulled cider, plates and plastic will be provided.

DCBC Meeting – October 24, 2017

October 23, 2017 – It’s time for our final scheduled official club meeting of 2017. This month we’ll meet at the Crossroads in Sturgeon Bay at 6:30pm on October 24th.

Experienced beekeepers, will share their preparation of hives for the winter months (all welcome to add their 2 cents):

Feeding, Treatments, Varroa mites, American and European Foul brood, Nosema, Mice, Temperature control, Blankets, Polystyrene, Pillows, Built-more board.

DCBC Meeting – September 23, 2017

Crossroads at Big Creek, 2041 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay

Paul Kenyon, local beekeeper geek, will show how to use the club owned Oxolic Acid Vaporizer. Build your confidence and understanding in utilizing this tool in controlling the varroa mites in your apiary.

Ivan Bissen, experienced beekeeper, will share his beekeeping journey and his top 5 lessons he’s learned along the way. Ivan’s 8 hive apiary is in Southern Door where he has been keeping bees for 11 years.

5:30 HIVE DIVE at the Ag Research Station (4312 HWY 42 in Sturgeon Bay).

Meet at the Garden Door. Max will do a quick hive dive just to show you the new and upcoming pest for bees in Door County – Small Hive Beetle.

6:30 CLUB MEETING at Cross Roads at Big Creek.

DCBC Meeting – June 27, 2017

June 25, 2017 – DCBC June Meeting – June 27, 2017
5:30pm – HIVE DIVE at Mary Schartner’s, Blue Spruce Farm, 1816 HWY 57, Sturgeon Bay (3 Miles North of Brussels)

Mary has been a bee keeper since 2010 and has 6 hives in her apiary. She has Italians, Russians, and Carniolan honey bees. Lots to view. Look for our DCBK flag at her entrance to the driveway. You will be driven out to the bee yard on an ATV for the hive dive. Bring your own bee clothing and wear boots, as the ground is wet.

7:00pm – Club Meeting at Belgian Delight Restaurant, 1100 County Road C, Brussels, WI (3 miles from Mary’s farm)

DCBC Meeting – May 23, 2017

May 22, 2017 – Our May meeting on the 23rd will be at the Peninsula Agricultural Station in Sturgeon Bay.
The topic will be: Hive Inspection / Hive Split (weather permitting)

This month we welcome Dan (the “old” bee inspector) and April (the new bee inspector). They will be doing a hive inspection and possibly a hive split at the research station (weather permitting). We will meet at the station and carpool to the hive in back.

April 25, 2017 – Hopefully you all got a chance to look at your bees in the warm weather and reverse the Brood Cambers and clean out the dead bees.

Regarding bee that have been ordered, the last I heard is the first few days in May for delivery.

Our April meeting is tonight, April 25th. Becky Masterman will be providing a great informational talk, and if you have questions she will have the answers and probably not just make stuff up like you know who!!! Hope to see you at the meeting.

DCBC Meeting – April 25, 2017

April 11, 2017 – Our April meeting on the 25th will be at Crossroads At Big Creek in Sturgeon Bay.
The topic will be: Keeping Bees Healthy: Updates on Bee Research, Management and Mite Check.

Pot Luck at 6:00pm: Come and join your fellow bee keepers over a pot luck gathering as a prelude to our monthly meeting.

Meeting Presenter: Dr. Becky Masterman, Associate Program Director University Minnesota Bee Squad, will present bee management tips with the latest research from the UMN and other Bee Labs. The Bee Squad communicates the latest bee research to audiences that are passionate about helping bees. Becky will share why the Varroa mite is considered by many to be the number one threat to honey bees and how we can work together to address the issue. Come learn more about bee research and the outreach mission of the Bee Squad!

March 2017 – Pollen Patties

March 18, 2017 – Just wanted to let you know what I am doing with my hives now that we are in the middle of March.

I have hard sugar on all my hives and will be adding a half pound Ultra bee patties to all the hives. I will be putting this on top of the my queen excluder where my hard candy is.
