DCBC Meeting: Honey Harvesting and Equipment – July 18th
July 18, 2023 @ 6:30 pm
Topic: Honey Harvesting and Equipment + Interactive Hive Dive!
During the June 10th hive splitting field demonstration, we had a number of comments from members asking for more hands-on demonstration presentations. That was nice to hear, so were going to do it again in July. This month, we will have an abbreviated meeting to showcase club equipment that is available for you to use and then talk about the Community Honey Harvest on August 19th. Following that, we are going to walk back to the club hives and offer two demonstrations. The first will be a honey harvesting demonstration from the Flow Hive. Then we will demonstrate how to treat for Varroa Mites using the Oxalic Acid vaporizer. Please be sure to bring your bee suit!
If you don’t have a suit, we will have club suits available for you to use.
6:30 pm: Showcase of Club Equipment
Over the past few years, the club has acquired quite a bit of equipment for members to use. We have adult and child bee suits, honey extractors (3), honey filtering screens, honey pails, Oxalic Acid vaporizers (2), and a number of other items. This year we purchased a 4-frame electric extractor. All these items are available for members use at any time.
Discussion and explanation on “Community Honey Harvest Event” – August 19th
This will be the fourth year we have hosted the event at Crossroads. It’s a wonderful family experience to learn about honeybees, products, honey harvesting, tasting opportunities, and children’s activities. We’ll briefly explain the events for this year. Additional help from members is still needed and would be much appreciated.
7:00 pm: Field Demonstrations at Club Hives
Many members have not had the opportunity to see honey directly harvested from a Flowhive. We will tap the club hive and show you how easy it is to harvest, with no filtering required. Following that, we want to show you how to treat for mites using one of our Oxalic Acid vaporizers.
