DCBC Meeting: Hive Dive and More – June 13
June 13 @ 11:00 am

Date: Saturday, June 13
Time: 11:00 AM
Location: Jonathan T. Parsons’ Apiary, 11279 Meadow Rd, Ellison Bay, WI
Jon will conduct a hive dive at his apiary, diving into multiple colonies at various stages of development. During the dive, you’ll have the opportunity to observe and learn about reading frames and the specific details of each colony.
This is an excellent chance to witness a larger-scale apiary operation.
We’ll do a complete apiary inspection looking at hives in different states — a small nuc, one being requeened, one in swarm mode, a strong honey producer, a weak colony, and so on. Lots of variety for people to read.
Jon will also be doing mite washes and dropping formic pads while we’re in there, so folks can see both in action.
At the end, we’ll graft larvae from a selected colony. That gives Jon a chance to walk through queen breeding for the small apiary — how to think about it, what to look for in a breeder queen, and how to set it up.
Logistical Notes
– Please park at the red pole building/old garage.
– The house bathroom will be available; it’s a short walk from the apiary.
– Jon will set up a small seating area with drinks and snacks in the shade.
